The fifth in Clarkson Research Studies' series of Shipping Sector Reports focuses on "Small Containerships".

In this report the term "small containership" is used to cover a range of ships active within the small liner trades. The report covers both fully cellular containerships below 1000 TEU in capacity and other "liner" non-fully cellular ships, categorised as Multi-Purpose and General Cargo vessels with a recorded container capacity. This is a wide-ranging fleet that currently consists of 3841 ships with a combined capacity of almost 1.6m TEU.

Decisions about the future role of this fleet are being made against the expansion of the wider containership fleet and the global liner route network. Liner operators have responded to consistent 6-8% per annum container trade growth by introducing bigger ships to the mainline arterial trades, and this is having important implications for the character of the requirement for small containerships.
